Nobody Said Transitions are Easy!

I didn’t start out in life knowing who I wanted to be or what I wanted to do when I grew up.

I did know that I wasn’t “wired” for what was considered to be a “traditional” career for women at the time, such as nursing, teaching, or working as a secretary or office clerk. I wanted to do something that paid better than those jobs did.

I wanted to be independent and provide for myself. I wanted to do what I wanted to do on my own terms.

By some miracle of the Universe, I stumbled onto the career that gave me much of what I wanted.

• It wasn’t traditional then for women to work in the construction industry.
• It gave me a paycheck that allowed me to provide for myself.
• It fulfilled my purpose to live my life on my terms.

But one thing was missing. Passion.

Over the years I periodically toyed with the idea of making a career transition. But there was always a “good reason” not to. It was easier to stay in the comfort zone of what I knew rather than venturing into unknown territory.

The Universe Isn’t Interested in Our Comfort

I believe we get messages from the Universe when it comes to our dreams. I believe She listens and responds, first with a whisper, and if we don’t pay attention, we get a tap on the shoulder. If we still don’t’ pay attention, we get a head slap!

I didn’t listen to the whisper or the tap on the shoulder. I got the head slap!

She’s Interested in Our Growth

Several months after September 11th, and after more than 30 years of employment, I was unexpectedly “invited” to take early retirement.

As John Lennon said, life happens while we are busy making other plans.

At the time, being laid off wasn’t part of my plan. It didn’t feel like something to be excited about. It felt downright terrifying!

If you are in the same boat, or if you have been, you know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s terrifying because there’s no road map for being “of a certain age” and starting over. You are stepping into do-it-yourself territory without a map or guidebook.

Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing about how my career transition unfolded. I discovered that a Sexy life happens outside of our comfort zones.

My journey led me to do what I feel blessed to do now – coach people who find themselves in spots like these:

When my company laid me off and life turned upside down, I considered finding another corporate job. But after a ton of introspection and with the support of fellow coaches, colleagues, and friends, I discovered I wanted to use my experience to help others who are facing similar circumstances to mine.
