I don’t know about you, but I didn’t start out in life knowing what I wanted to be when I grew up. I knew what I didn’t want. I didn’t want a job that was considered to be a “traditional” career for women at the time. Those jobs didn’t pay well. I wanted something that allowed me to provide for myself and gave me the opportunity to do things I wanted to do on my own terms.
By some miracle of the Universe, I stumbled onto the career that gave me what I wanted. Except for one thing. Passion.
Over the years I occasionally toyed with the idea of making a career transition, but there was always a “good reason” not to. So I stayed because it was easier than starting over.
What I didn’t know then was that the Universe was listening. And I believe she puts events in motion for our highest good even before we are consciously aware we’ve asked for something. So we should be careful what we ask for.
A few months after September 11th, I was unexpectedly “invited” to take early retirement. As John Lennon once said, life happens while we are busy making other plans.
Even though I had danced with the idea of making a career transition, having it happen this way didn’t seem like something to be excited about. It felt downright terrifying!
If you are in the same boat, or have been, you know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s terrifying because there’s no road map for being “of a certain age” and starting over.
Looking back now, I wouldn’t change a thing about how my career transition unfolded, because it led me to do what I feel blessed to do now – coach people who find themselves in spots like these:
Why Career and Life Design Coaching?
Sometimes the gift you have to give comes from things that have happened to you. When my life turned upside down and I got laid off, I considered finding another corporate job. But after a ton of introspection and the support of coaches, colleagues and friends, I realized I wanted to use my experience to help people facing circumstances similar to mine. And so began the adventure of a lifetime – to remodel my life and design my Sexy Second Act.
Have you ever remodeled a home? If you have, you know that it never goes quite the way you planned. It’s messy. It’s uncomfortable. You wonder what the heck you’ve gotten yourself into. But in the end, it works out and you get to live in a house that fits your style.
Designing your Sexy Second Act is a lot like that. It’s an adventure that will take you places you didn’t expect to go. And as tough as it seems at times, the results will be worth the challenges.
Based on my personal experience, I believe that if you are reading this, you’ve arrived at the perfect time for you to take your talent and years of knowledge, experience and wisdom and create a brand new way to work that fits you and fits how the world is evolving. And I believe you can design it in a way that serves your needs and your desire for a rich and fulfilling ”Sexy Second Act” that allows you to enjoy your life, make a difference, and leave a legacy.
